MOUNDRIDGE – In a battle of county rivals, the Moundridge softball team got the best of Inman in both games of a doubleheader on Friday, winning game one 7-4 before pounding out a 25-7 victory in the second game.

With the two wins, the Lady Wildcats are now 2-0 for 2023 and will be back on the diamond Thursday, April 6 hosting Remington.

The Lady Teutons drop to 1-3 for the season as they prep to host Hutchinson Trinity on Thursday, April 6.

In game one Inman jumped out to a 4-1 advantage at the end of two innings before Moundridge added single runs in the third and fourth to pull within a run. The Lady Wildcats then punched across three runs in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead before adding an insurance run in the seventh to gain the final 7-4 win.

“I thought to start the game we were a little nervous and got behind quickly,” explained Lady Wildcat head coach Lynn Eichelberger. “We settled in after that and started chipping away at the lead. We only gave up one more run the last six-innings as our defense looked good for the first doubleheader of the year.”

For the Lady Wildcats, Macy Kaminkow had a pair of hits and Addy Falco knocked across two runs while scoring twice. They ran the bases well, stealing a total of 13 as both Kaminkow and Falco each had three steals, and Sam Strausz and Kindall Elmore each swiped a pair.

Emily Durst pitched, throwing just 85 pitches in seven innings and giving up six hits, four earned runs and a pair of walks plus striking out three.

Inman managed six hits with Joee Hurley and Kenna Woods each hammering out a pair. Alyssa Johnson pounded out a double while scoring once and getting one run batted in. Woods also had a two of the other three runs batted in.

Emma Brown threw just 85 pitches in a complete game effort for the Lady Teutons as she gave up just five hits, four earned runs, walked only three and struck out 15.

Moundridge coach Eichelberger gave Inman’s Emma Brown a lot of credit when he noted, “Inman’s starting pitcher Emma Brown is very good at keeping the hitters off balance and we were for the most part. As we got more at-bats against her, we started to put the ball in play. We only managed five hits, three of which came from freshmen Sam Strausz and Macy Kaminkow.”

For the nightcap, Moundridge took a 5-2 lead in the first inning and then pounded out 10 runs in the third and nine in the fourth to score the run rule shortened, 25-7 victory.

The Lady Wildcats only needed nine hits to gain the win as Emily Durst recorded three of those and both Kindall Elmore and Aubree Durst each had a pair. The quartet of Emily and Aubree Durst, Elmore, and Macy Kaminkow all scored three times while Emily Durst got credit for five runs batted in. Moundridge stole another 13 bases, giving them 26 steals in two games as Emily Durst, Elmore and Falco each swiped three.

Not only did Emily Durst have a huge game at the plate, she was also on the mound again, giving up nine hits, just three earned runs, walking two and striking out two.

The Lady Teutons managed to knock out nine hits in the nightcap with Emma Brown and Kenna Woods each getting a pair with Brown recorded a double. Alyssa Johnson had three runs batted in thanks to hammering out a double.

Aoife Turcotte worked the mound for Inman, throwing 143 pitches in just four innings while giving up nine hits, 15 earned runs, walking seven and striking out four.

Coach Eichelberger closed out his post-game reflections by stating, “Senior Emily Durst pitched well and kept the batters guessing in both games. We got off to a better start in the second game as Inman had a young pitcher on the mound and we took advantage of a few mistakes by their defense to score runs. Our defense did not help as much in the nightcap as we had too many errors. It was really windy and dusty for part of the games which had negative effects on the defenses.”
