            CANTON – The Canton/Galva softball team made their 2023 home debut on Friday and scored a dominating doubleheader sweep of visiting Sedgwick, winning game one 17-4 before pounding out a 19-9 victory in the nightcap.

            With the two wins the Lady Eagles are now 3-1 on the season and will not be back on the competitive diamond again until Tuesday, April 11 when they travel to Marion.

            The season home opener was all Canton/Galva as they spotted Sedgwick two runs in the top of the first before putting five across in the bottom of the inning and then pushing 11 runs across in the second on their way to the game shortened 17-4 victory.

            Freshman Emerson Hoppes and senior Brecken Pearson each recorded three hits to lead the Lady Eagle offense. Pearson, Jordan Friesen and Julia Allen each hit for a double while Friesen recorded five runs batted in and Allen, Pearson, and Adi Alcala all scored three times.

            Jordan Friesen worked all five innings on the mound for Canton/Galva as she three 111 pitches while giving up six hits, four earned runs and six walks to go with striking out 10.

            In game two, Sedgwick took an early 5-1 lead in the first inning and held a 5-3 advantage before adding a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

            Canton/Galva exploded at the plate in the bottom of the fifth as they scored 10 runs before adding five more in the sixth inning in earning the final 10-run, 19-9 win.

            Seven Lady Eagles had at least a pair of hits led by Julia Allen with five, Emerson Hoppes with four and both Jayden Orth and Adi Alcala each getting three.

            Allen had a huge game as she went five-for-five with five runs scored while hitting for a double and hammering out a home run. Jordan Friese finished with four runs batted in as she also hit for both a double and a home run.

            Friesen began the game on the mound and threw three innings, 70 pitches while striking out four. Brecken Pearson came on to throw the final three innings and get the win while throwing 57 pitches, giving up just three hits, two earned runs and one walk plus striking out eight.
