GOESSEL – While hosting a track/field meet in Goessel, the Canton/Galva teams were led by Jett Vincent, Wyatt Collins, and Lane McMannis who each earned first-place finishes in a meet with six teams participating.

In the boys meet, the Eagles finished as a team with 72 points which was good for fourth among six teams. Berean Academy ran away with the team title while Hesston and Moundridge each placed ahead of the Eagles.
Jett Vincent won the 200 meters; Wyatt Collins threw the best discus and Lane McMannis took first in the 300-meter hurdles to lead the Eagles. The three also piled up team points in the shot put where Collins placed second, and both the 200 meters and javelin where McMannis finished second and fourth. Vincent contributed team points with a second-place finish in the high jump to go with a pair of third place runs in the 100 and 400 meters.
“Weather was good for throwing events as several Eagle throwers earned season bests,” noted Canton/Galva head coach Tina McMannis. “(Lane) McMannis and (Makinlee) Hoppes both had season bests in the javelin while (Wyatt) Collins, (Preston) Minson, and (Brayden) O’Hara did so in the discus.”
For the Lady Eagles, they finished sixth with 33 points as Berean Academy and Hesston finished first and second just like they did in the boys competition.
Three Lady Eagles, including two freshman scored medals on the day as senior Mimi Craig placed second in the shot put, freshmen Trinity Espinoza and Jordyn Elliot both finished third in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles, respectively. Craig also placed fourth in the discus while Espinoza was fourth in the 200 meters and another freshman, Makinlee Hoppes was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.
Coach McMannis concluded her post-meet reflections by saying, “Our team is getting close to halfway through our regular season and needs to continue to work on conditioning leading up to our league and regional meets in May. We are seeing some great progress in the first half of the schedule.”
Next up on the schedule for the Canton/Galva boys and girls track/field teams will be on Tuesday, April 18 when they travel to Solomon.
