MOUNDRIDGE – It was a good day for the home fans as the Moundridge baseball team had a comeback one-run win in game one before getting a six-run victory and doubleheader sweep on Tuesday over Bennington.

In game one, Bennington was up 7-3 after the top of the sixth inning when the Wildcats pushed across five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-7 lead. After Bennington got a runner on base in the top of the seventh, Moundridge’s Lane Durst made a diving play for a catch and threw it back to second to Ty Rains to double up a runner and end the game on a double play.
“Game one was a comeback that ended on a great play by Lane (Durst) in center field,” noted Wildcat head coach Jason Rains.
Logan Churchill and London Ward each had a pair of hits with Ward getting a double and Churchill pounding out a triple to lead the Wildcat offense. Ty Rains stole four bases and scored three times as the team totaled 13 stolen bases in the game.
The Wildcats used three pitchers on the mound in the first game as Clay Wilson, London Ward and Logan Churchill combined to throw 119 pitches, give up seven hits, seven earned runs, walk five and strike out 10.
After the game was tied at 2-2 going into the bottom of the fourth, the Wildcats poured seven runs onto the scoreboard to earn the final 9-3 second game victory and claim the doubleheader sweep.
Coach Rains concluded his reflections on the day by saying, “We carried the momentum from game won into game two and played a solid game. Our pitchers did a great job being efficient tonight as we had to watch pitch counts for our upcoming Friday games. Very proud of our guys for the way they battled tonight.”
Ty Rains had a huge second game with three hits that included a double and a triple. Layton Schmidt had a pair of hits that included a double while Joaquin Huff also hit a double.
Layton Schmidt worked the first four innings and threw 51 pitches while giving up just three hits, a pair of earned runs, walked zero batters and struck out six. Logan Churchill and Ty Rains came on in relief.
Now 3-5 for the season, the Wildcats will be back on the competitive diamond on Friday at Sedgwick.
