CANTON – On Friday, the Canton/Galva baseball team used up a lot of energy and time in game one of a home doubleheader against Ell-Saline, winning by one, 3-2 in 10 innings before game two was called in the second inning due to weather.
Now 3-4 for the season, the Eagles have a county rival week ahead as they go on the road to Inman on Tuesday before hosting Moundridge on Friday.
In the first game on Friday, neither team could score through three innings before the Eagles put a run across in the fourth. With Ell-Saline getting a pair of runs in the sixth and the Eagles added one to their scorebook, the two teams stay knotted at 2-2 until the tenth when a walk pushed an Eagle run across to earn them the victory 3-2.
Ross Burrill had two of the Canton/Galva’s three hits of which one was a triple while Dylan Cherry had the other hit in the game and it was a double.
Garrett Maltbie began the game on the mound for the Eagles and threw 74 pitches and four innings of no-hit, no-run ball with three walks and six strikeouts before giving way to Gavin Robertson. Robertson threw 70 pitches over four innings and gave up just a pair of hits with no earned runs while walking two and striking out five. Noah Collins was brought in for the final two innings and earned the win after throwing 33 pitches of no-hit, no-run ball with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.
Overall, the three Eagle pitchers tossed 177 pitches, gave up no earned runs, walked seven and struck out 15.
The second game of the doubleheader found the Eagles up in the bottom of the second with one out and holding a 3-2 lead before weather forced the game to be called.
