HALSTEAD – The Smoky Valley baseball team went on the road Tuesday and split a doubleheader at Halstead, winning game one 4-1 before dropping the nightcap 8-5.
With the split, the Vikings are now 4-8 on the season as they get ready to host Pratt on Friday.
In game one, the Vikings scored all four of their runs in the sixth inning to get the win.
Braxton House and Ty Heitschmidt each had a pair of hits in the game while Kade Blanchat threw a complete, 98 pitch game for the win. Blanchat gave up six hits, had no earned runs and walked just one while striking out eight.
After Halstead took a 5-0 lead into the third inning, the Vikings scored twice to cut the deficit in half. Halstead added three more runs over the next three innings before Smoky Valley tried to rally in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs only to fall short and suffer the final three-run, 8-5 loss.
Both Braxton House and Ty Heitschmidt went 3-for-4 in the game with Heitschmidt pounding out a double and knocking across a pair of runs to lead the Smoky Valley offense.
Heitschmidt pitched the first three innings and used 71 pitches, giving up eight hits, just two earned runs, walked just two and struck out three. Ethan able came on for the final three innings and took the loss giving up a pair of hits and striking out four.
