CANTON – In a doubleheader where both games had familiarities in stats, the Moundridge and Canton/Galva baseball teams split a doubleheader on Friday with the Eagles gaining a win in game one before the Wildcats got the best score in game two.
With the split the Wildcats now sit at 4-8 for the season while the Eagles are 5-7. Canton/Galva will be back on the competitive diamond Tuesday hosting Hillsboro while Moundridge will have a week off before hosting Ell-Saline on Friday.
In game one, Canton/Galva held a two-run, 6-4 advantage after four innings. After Moundridge put five runs on the board in the top of the fifth to take a 9-6 lead, the Eagles pushed four runs in the fifth and then added five more in the sixth to back a lead of 15-9. While the Wildcats scored four times in the top of the seventh, they came up short as the Eagles won by two, 15-13.

Gavin Robertson was huge for Canton/Galva as he went 3-for-5 with seven runs batted in and scored twice while pounding out a double, triple and a home run. Garrett Maltbie also had a pair of hits though it was Ross Burrill and Dylan Cherry who hit for doubles.
Robertson also began the game on the mound for the Eagles and went two innings before Garrett Maltbie and Braison Alcala threw a pair followed up by John Burrill in the final two where he got credit for the win. Overall, the four threw 170 pitches, gave up 10 hits, eight earned runs, walked nine and struck out eight.
For the Wildcats, both Ty Rains and Joaquin Huff had a pair of doubles each while Layton Wiens went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Rains, Layton Schmidt, Huff and Clay Wilson all pitched for Moundridge, combining to throw 126 pitches, give up 11 hits, 12 earned runs, walk five and strike out seven.

After the Eagles took a 5-0 lead in the first inning of game two, the Wildcats scored six times in the second and once in the third to take a 7-6 lead into the fourth when the Eagles added four more runs to take back the lead at 10-7. While Canton/Galva did get three more runs in the game they could not overcome a Wildcat onslaught in inning six where they poured across nine runs and then added three in the top of the seventh to get the final seven-run, 20-13 nightcap victory.
Layton Schmidt went 3-for-5 for Moundridge in game two with two hits being doubles as he knocked in six runs and scored twice. Both Layton Wiens and London Ward chipped in with three runs batted in.
On the mound, Schmidt started for Moundridge before giving way to Wiens early and then London Ward came on to throw the final four innings and get the win as he tossed 109 pitches, gave up eight hits, just five earned runs, walked three and struck out nine. The threesome totaled 13 strikeouts in the game.
Canton/Galva’s Garrett Maltbie, Braison Alcala and Dylan Cherry each had a pair of hits with Cherry and Gavin Robertson hammering out doubles and Maltbie stole four bases while Ross Burrill swiped three.
