CANTON – In two games both decided in the final inning of play, the Canton/Galva baseball team split a doubleheader on Tuesday at home with Hutchinson Trinity, losing game one 12-5 and then winning the second game 11-10.

With the split, the Eagles remain .500 on the season at 8-8 as they prep to play on Saturday with a makeup game against Remington.

In game one the Eagles took a 5-2 lead into the seventh inning when Trinity exploded for 10 runs to take a win in the doubleheader opener, 12-5.

Gavin Robertson went 3-for-5 and Braison Alcala went 3-for-3 to lead the Eagle bats as both also pounded out a double in the process.

Robertson, Garrett Maltbie, Alcala and Ryder Norstrom all spent time on the mound for Canton/Galva and struck out a total of a dozen.

“We played six very solid innings,” explained Eagle head coach Seth Moddelmog. “Defense and pitching were really good and offensively we were better than we have been. We did leave too many on base and had a couple of baserunning mistakes. Despite that we had a solid lead going into the seventh and no other way to say this, but the wheels fell off. Credit Trinity for putting pressure on us defensively as we did not handle it well.”

In the nightcap, the Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning before Trinity put five runs on the board over the second and third innings to tie the game. After Canton/Galva added a run in the third and two in the fourth they again had the lead at 8-5.

Trinity scored twice in the top of the sixth to pull within one and the Eagles scored once in the bottom to push the lead back to two at 9-7. After Trinity put three runs on the board in the top of the seventh to take a 10-9 advantage, the Eagles managed to score twice in the bottom of the inning to earn the final 11-10 victory.

Ross Burrill went 4-for-5 in the game while Gavin Robertson, Garrett Maltbie, Dylan Cherry, and Ryder Norstrom all chipped in with a pair of hits as the team totaled 14 in the game. Norstrom accounted for five runs batted in and both Maltbie and Alcala each scored three times. Robertson hit a pair of doubles and Norstrom hit one with Maltbie pounding out a triple.

Ross Burrill, Gavin Robertson and Noah Collins all took turns on the mound for the Eagles, using 161 pitches to give up 11 hits, seven earned runs, walking six and striking out 13.

Coach Moddelmog concluded his reflections on the games by adding, “Game two was a fun game to be a part of and just proud of the guys for rebounding from game one and continuing to battle to get the win.”
