            HESSTON – It was a good Thursday for the Smoky Valley track/field teams as they finished first and second in the boys and girls divisions of the eight-team Hesston Invitational.

            The team as a whole was led by Breanne Peters as she earned four first-place medals by winning the pole vault and triple jump in the field events plus the 100- and 200- meters in sprints. Peters set personal best marks in both the 100 meters and triple jump.

            Clara McElroy also earned a first-place medal for the Lady Vikings as she won the 100-meter hurdles. The Lady Vikings finished with 14 top-three finishes while setting 10 personal record bests for the day.

            As a team, the Lady Vikings finished with 132 points which was good for second behind team champion Cheney with 154. Halstead and Hesston rounded out the top four teams competing.

            The Viking boys won their team championship with 143 points, well ahead of runner-up Cheney who had 125. Hesston and Halstead finished third and fourth.

            Smoky Valley recorded six first-place finishes for the day with Justice Autry winning the 100 meters in personal record best time, Wyatt Johnson finished first in the 400 meters, Tytus Reed placed first in the 800 meters and Justin Holt set a personal record in winning the shot put.

            The 4×400 meter relay quartet of Ki Blanchat, Tytus Reed, Karson Pihl, and Wyatt Johnson not only won the event in personal record time, but they also set a new meet record.

            Getting the sixth first-place medal for the Vikings was the 4×800 meter relay team of Tytus Reed, Ki Blanchat, Karson Pihl and Wyatt Johnson.

            As a team the Viking boys set 12 personal best marks while recording 16 top three finishes, including going first, second and third in the 100 meters, as well as running first and second in the 400 meters.
