37 AREA ATHLETES RANKED TOP 5 IN TRACK/FIELD, 6 RANKED 1st

            Through six weeks of the high school 2023 track/field season and the week of many league meets, the six area small schools are still well represented in the catchitkansas.com rankings for Wednesday, May 10.

            A total of 81 area athletes made the top-15 of an event in either Class 3A, 2A or 1A while 37 of those were ranked in the top-five of an event and six were ranked as the top person in their event.

            Little River has the most in the top-15 with 18 while Moundridge has 17, Inman has 16, Smoky Valley has 14, Canton/Galva has nine and Elyria Christian has seven. Inman has the most in the top-5 with nine.

            Those ranked number one in an event included  Inman’s Tanner Heckel who ranked number one in both the long jump and triple jump for Class 2A boys, Braxton Lafferty of Little River in Class 1A javelin, Madilyn Heflin of Inman in Class 2A girls 110-meter hurdles, Breanne Peters of Smoky Valley in the Class 3A girls 100 meters plus and Moundridge boys 4×100 meter relay in Class 2A boys.

            Other notable rankings for the area girls include Smoky Valley’s Breanne Peters who was also ranked second in both the pole vault and triple jump while being third in the long jump for Class 3A girls. Heflin of Inman also ran second in the Class 2A girls 300-meter hurdles.

            For the area boys Class 2A, Eli Brunk of Inman is ranked second in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles while Kaden Elmore of Moundridge, Harrison Brunk of Inman and MacKaleb Unruh of Moundridge ranked second, third and fourth in the 100 meters with Tanner Heckel of Inman making it four in the top-10 as he is ranked ninth.
