VIKING BOYS FINISH 2nd

By Staff

LYONS – For the fifth consecutive time, the Smoky Valley girls track/field team won the Central Kansas League meet title led by Breanne Peters three event wins while the Viking boys finished second.

“We had a heck of a nice day,” noted Viking head coach Jay Myers. “The inclement weather never materialized thankfully. Our kids left it all out there and while we did not get everything we would have liked to have had, but we also got some pleasant surprises. A few of our individuals may have had some disappointments, none of our coaches did.”

Of all the Viking athletes finishing an event placed for team points, 19 set personal records and one relay team broke a league meet record in their efforts.

The Lady Vikings finished the meet with 123 points, well ahead of runner-up Hesston who had 90. Larned, Halstead and Pratt rounded out the top five of the ten team meet.

Breanne Peters led Smoky Valley by winning three events, the 100 meters, triple jump and pole vault while running second in the 200 meters. Peters set personal records in both the sprint events.

Clara McElroy ran a personal best in the 300-meter hurdles which gained her a first-place medal as well. Of the 22 times the Lady Vikings scored team points, 11 came with top-three finishes while nine times setting personal best in the event.

Speaking of the Lady Vikings, coach Myers said, “What can be said about our girls? How about five in a row league champion. We had them giving laser focused efforts in several events that helped us stack up some points.”

In the boys meet, the Vikings finished second with 113 points to Pratt’s league champion 132 while managing to finish the meet one point ahead of Hesston. Hoisington and Halstead finished out the top half of the team standings.

Wyatt Johnson in the 400 meters and Tytus Reed in the 1,600 meters led the Vikings as they both set personal records in winning. Karson Pihl (with a personal best time) and Ki Blanchat finished second and fourth behind Johnson in the 400.

Smoky Valley’s 4×400 meter relay quartet of Blanchat, Reed, Pihl, and Johnson not only won the event they set a new meet record while the same foursome both won and set a personal record in the 4×800 meter relay as well.

Overall, the Viking boys finished in scoring positions 17 times with 10 of those being a top-three finish while setting 10 personal records on the day.

Focusing his final post-meet reflections on the Viking boys, coach Myers added, “Congratulations to Pratt while congratulations to us for beating Hesston by one point. We stacked up our guys as best we could, and we came to compete.”
