NICKERSON – Led by Breanne Peters, the Smoky Valley track/field teams qualified for 13 state meet events during their Class 3A regional track/field meet in Nickerson on Friday.

As a team the Lady Vikings finished third with 61 points, trailing only meet champion Beloit and Cheney. Hesston and Eureka rounded out the top five of 16 teams participating.
Breanne Peters won both the triple jump (35”11.25’) and pole vault (11’0”) while also qualifying for state in both the 100 (12.53) and 200 (26.97) meters giving her top two regional state qualifying in four events.
The Smoky Valley girls had 11 top-six finishes and seven within the top three while Hope Duncan in the triple jump (35’4”) and Noelle Peters in the pole vault (10’6”) along with the 4×400 (4:17.25) meter relay team also qualified for next weeks state meet.
The Viking boys finished seventh in the team standings with 42 points as Southeast of Saline, Council Grove, Wichita Collegiate, Wichita Trinity, and Cheney finished first to fifth.
Both the Viking 4×400 (3:25.07) and 4×800 (8:06.69) meter relays finished first and qualified for state while nine Vikings finished in scoring positions and three within the top three.
Besides the two relay teams qualifying for state, three individuals also qualified with Wyatt Johnson in the 400 meters (50.77), Trystan Stambaugh in the javelin (147’1”), and Justin Holt in the shot put (48’1.75”).
