WICHITA – They came within a hair of winning another state title only to fall short by half a point as the Smoky Valley Lady Viking track/field team finished tied for second at the 2023 Class 3A state meet over the weekend.

Finishing tied with Phillipsburg at 41 points, LaCygne/Prairie View won the state title with 41.50 points, oh so close. Norton (40) and Eureka (37) rounded out the top five of the team standings.

Scoring 36 of the Lady Vikings 41 points was Breanne Peters who won both the 100 meters, with a personal best 12.19, and the 200 meters (25.44) while finishing second in both the pole vault (11’0”) and triple jump (25’11”).

The final five points for the Lady Vikings came from Hope Duncan who finished fourth in the triple jump.

The Viking boys finished 18th with 18 points, well behind the top three in Class 3A of Wichita Collegiate (60), Southeast of Saline (51), and Wichita Trinity (48).

Supplying the majority of the Viking boys points was the 4×400 and 4×800 meter relay teams who finished third and second, respectively. Running legs, though not in the same order, of both relays were Tytus Reed, Ki Blanchat, Karson Pihl and Wyatt Johnson.
